Agadir Water Temperature and Which Wetsuit to Bring

Agadir's water is mild all year. It never gets tropical and it never gets properly cold, which is why the surf season here does not stop. This is what to expect, and what to put in the bag.

Sea temperature through the year

Published forecast data for Agadir puts the sea between roughly 16°C at its coolest and 22°C at its warmest. February is typically the coldest month; late August and September the warmest. The change is gradual — there is no month where it suddenly flips.

• December to March — around 16 to 19°C.
• April to June — climbing through the high teens.
• July to October — around 20 to 22°C.
• November — easing back down.

Which wetsuit

• Winter, roughly 16–19°C — a 3/2mm full suit is the standard choice here. A 4/3mm if you feel the cold or you are staying in for two hours.
• Spring and autumn, 18–21°C — a 3/2mm is still the safe call; a shorty works on warm, windless days.
• Peak summer, 21–22°C — a shorty or a spring suit. Plenty of people surf in a rash vest and boardshorts in August.

You do not need boots, gloves or a hood in Agadir at any point in the year. The wind matters more than the water: a windy 20°C day feels colder out of the water than a still 18°C one, so the layer you want most is the dry one you put on afterwards.

What you actually have to pack

If you are booking a lesson, almost nothing. The wetsuit, the board and the equipment are included, and there are showers and lockers at the base. Bring a towel, sunscreen, and something warm for afterwards.

Sun, not just water

The thing that catches visitors out here is not the cold, it is the sun. Two hours in the water in January will burn you if you skip sunscreen. Use a high factor, put it on before the wetsuit, and reapply if you are in for a long session.

A note on hire versus bringing your own

If you are flying in for under a week, it is rarely worth carrying a suit. Agadir sits in the mildest part of the range where a single 3/2mm covers almost the whole year, and that is exactly what you will be handed. Bring your own only if you are staying for a long trip or you are particular about fit.

Why the same temperature feels different here

Two things change how 18°C feels. The first is wind: an onshore afternoon strips heat off a wet suit far faster than a still morning, which is another argument for surfing early. The second is how hard you are working. A beginner in the whitewater is moving constantly and rarely gets cold; sitting still waiting for a set out the back is what chills you.

How to tell if your suit fits

A wetsuit works by holding a thin layer of water against your skin and letting your body warm it. If it is loose, that water flushes and you get cold in a suit that should have been warm enough. It should feel snug to the point of being slightly annoying on dry land, with no bagging in the lower back or behind the knees, and you should still be able to fill your lungs completely.

Looking after a hire suit

Rinse it, do not leave it baking in the sun on a car roof, and hang it folded at the waist rather than stretched on a thin hanger. Sunlight and heat destroy neoprene faster than salt water does.

The rest of the kit

• Rash vest — worth it in summer for sun and board rash.
• Sunscreen — a high factor, reef-safe if you can, applied before the suit goes on.
• Something warm and dry for after — the single item people most often wish they had brought.
• Water — two hours of paddling dehydrates you more than you expect.
