Wave Rise Surf School · Beginner lessons

Beginners welcome

Your first surf lesson in Agadir.

Most people who book with Wave Rise have never stood on a surfboard. The session is built around that, not around people who already surf.

How a first lesson actually runs

You arrive fifteen minutes early. We fit a wetsuit and a board to your height and weight, and you leave your things in a locker. The first part of the lesson happens on dry sand: where to lie on the board, how to read a wave that is about to reach you, how to stand up, and what to do when you fall — which you will, and which is entirely normal. Only then do you go in.

What happens in the water

Your instructor stays in the whitewater with you, turns the board, and pushes you into waves so that you can concentrate on standing rather than on paddling. Between waves you get a correction: hands flat, look at the beach, feet further back. Most guests stand up during their first session.

Which lesson beginners should book

A group lesson is the cheapest way to find out whether you enjoy surfing. If you are nervous in the sea, if you want to progress in one session rather than three, or if you are booking for a child, take a semi-private or private lesson — the amount of individual attention is the single thing that changes how fast a beginner improves.

Surfing with children

Children surf in the same whitewater, on softboards, with an instructor within arm's reach. For younger or more anxious children a private lesson is worth the difference, because the instructor never has to divide their attention.

Questions we are asked

Can a complete beginner surf in Agadir?

Yes. Agadir Bay is a sandy beach with no reef and long, slow whitewater, which is why it is one of the more forgiving places in Morocco to learn.

Will I stand up on my first lesson?

Most guests do. It depends on the day's conditions and on how comfortable you are in water, and no honest surf school will promise it.

What should I bring?

Swimwear, a towel, and sunscreen. Board, wetsuit, showers and a locker are included.

What is the minimum age?

Children are welcome. Message us on WhatsApp at +212 670 082 780 with your child's age and swimming ability and we will tell you honestly whether a group or a private lesson is the right choice.
